Arnold's Profile
Arnold's Information
Arnold's has won more friends than any other restaurant in Cape Town and enjoyed wide acclaim for its stunning breakfast. Founded in 1999 and located opposite the historic Mount Nelson Hotel, on Kloof Street, Arnold's has an outdoor, seated area with magnificent views of Table Mountain as well as a warm, well-lighted and romantic dining area.
Arnold Bettendorf has been in the Hospitality industry for the last 36 years, he started working in the restaurant business from the age of 14. Arnold did his apprenticeship in some of the best hotels in Germany. He worked in Berlin and top hotels in London. He opened the Wild Coast Sun and was responsible for the Food and Beverage operation there for 4 years.
Arnold has been operating his own restaurants successfully for the last 23 years in Johannesburg and Cape Town. He enjoys dealing with customers in a relaxed but professional manner, and is known for stocking good quality, well matured wines.
On weekends, Arnold's arguably saves more lives than hospitals, serving good value and cheerful breakfasts from early in the morning until 5pm. At Arnold's nothing is a problem, just don't run away without paying the bill!
Since January 2006, chef Yusef has consolidated the Arnold's menu and continues to create consistently good food. Fantastic lunch specials are served from 11am and there are always interesting dinner specials. Off the a la carte menu, the Fillet Steak on Mushroom and the Johan's sirloin are signature dishes.
There is also a variety of game dishes, with shadows of Ernest Hemingway himself to be found delivering the daily catch. And the crocodile ribs always peak curiosity. Be sure to catch the daily happy hour from 4.30pm to 6.30pm when drinks are at special prices. Your hosts Paul, Mike, Ben, Mal and Arnold wish you a warm welcome to Arnold's. Enjoy the experience!

Arnold's any day!
By Luanne MellettMarch 6 2008
Always have a good time at Arnolds. Service is good, always welcoming. Must have eaten there 50 times in the last couple of years and have never had a bad meal. Rocking spot for breakfast/lunch or dinner.
The Morning Star!
By Joran GreefApril 15 2008
Right so my garage door remote is not working. My car is stuck. And I'm supposed to meet a colleague at Arnold's at 6:45 in the morning. So I walk. And it couldn't be better. Through the Mount Nelson. And I see umbrella's at the end of the tunnel. Arnold's umbrella's.
But there is light at the end of the tunnel too. Candle light that is. On every outside and inside table at Arnold's. At 6:45am? Well, the sun hasn't risen yet. But Arnold's itself has no other lights. And neither do the other places on Kloof Street. That's because the Cape Town city bowl power has been cut yet again. But Arnold's is prepared of course. Even at 6:45am!
The famous R8 breakfast special is on the go. Nothing budges for the power. As Arnold himself says: "it could be worse". Hmmm! Ever the optimist! Great service as ever. Nothing different except the candelight giving way to daylight, and fresh bread in lieu of toast, which was a surprise since I've been there so many times that an Arnold's early bird breakfast is a symbol of being awake to me!
I could write many reviews for Arnold's and I probably should since it has become for me what La Closerie De Lilas on the Boulevard Montparnasse was to the the Lost Generation in the early days of Paris.
It has tables for every occasion. Tables you can get to know and become familiar with. A sidewalk filled with interesting people. Waiters who preempt that second glass of water alongside your usual cappuccino or espresso if you want to be completely serious about it. Views of the most beautiful mountain in the world. A happy hour to return for and a spirit that I am sure will endure.
