95 Keerom Street, circa 1682, originally housed the stables and slave quarters of the Company Gardens. Many of the original elements, including the façade and brick walls, have been saved in the restoration process. These fascinating features, combined with the elegant, modern lines of the décor, contribute to the eclectic atmosphere of the restaurant.

The upstairs area is open-plan and modern, setting an extremely glamorous tone. Alternatively, 95 Keerom has three smaller rooms downstairs which provide a quieter, more intimate space. In addition to this, a versatile private dining room can be configured to cater for up to twelve people - ideal for celebrating special occasions.

95 is open for lunches from Monday to Friday and for dinners from Monday to Saturday. Bookings are essential.

Taking its origins from authentic Milanese cuisine, 95 provides genuine Italian food, through the use of the highest quality local and imported ingredients. 95 Keerom bakes bread twice daily and the passionate Executive Chef and owner, Giorgio Nava ensures that his supply of everything fresh is provided for by his own fishing boat and Karoo farm.

The menu contains firm favourites such as seasonal salads, freshly home-made pastas, a list of raw and cooked carpaccios, fresh fish and ample classic Italian meat creations. Desserts like the liquid-centre white and dark chocolate soufflés are not to be missed.

The wine list offers only the finest award-winning South African and Italian wines, with a large selection of champagnes and methode cap classiques.

Although tucked away in an easily-missable corner, 95 Keerom has the lines and feel of a two-piece Armani suit. Old and modern seams meet comfortably. There are a series of smaller rooms and a cocktail bar downstairs (where brick-work sections date to the 17th century). Upstairs, the seating area is open-plan with a warm, organic feel. The security man may appear Mafia-worthy muscle, and the high-price butterflies may flutter slightly, but 95 Keerom is unpretentious fine-dining.

We were seated upstairs and as soon as the gourmet olive oil was drizzled, happy bursts of British and French accents could be detected from neighbouring tables. Seafood and grilled mains were our choices, all tasty. The different tuna mains proved good bets, as did the rocket covered beef fillet. The lamb chops are perhaps better if you prefer your grills fatty. We chose "the best bean salad", parmesan-dressed potato, and spinach as side dishes.

However, the thick maze that is Giorgio Nava's accent, the carpaccio specialities, the extensive wine list, the quickly-arriving meal orders, the olive tree exhibit, everything is trumped by a two-word dessert whisper "chocolate soufflé". Not for the faint-palated, it is at its molten best when shared by two. The average cost for our super party was literally R200 per person (for a shared bottle of Pinot, a main course, dessert and service tip). But it was a painless parting in exchange for a calm and enjoyable dinner.
